Yodeling, a traditional form of vocal expression, holds a special place in the heart of Swiss culture. Rooted in the high mountains and valleys of Switzerland, yodeling transcends mere music – it's a way of communicating emotions, stories, and the sheer exuberance of life in these rugged terrains. In this post, we'll discuss where to see yodeling in Switzerland today, as it is not as common to come across as it once was.
Given that my great-grandmother used to yodel, I was especially keen on experiencing this during my trip to Switzerland. However, I couldn’t find many options in my search. After only discovering one dinner show, I found a way to fit it into my itinerary. I’ve written all about this unique dining experience below, as it was a true highlight of my trip!

If you're wondering where to find traditional yodeling in Switzerland but are not visiting during a festival, you'll have to go to Lucerne's Old Town to find it. In the heart of Old Town, you'll find Stadkeller, a traditional eatery with a knack for sharing the Swiss culture with hungry tourists.
From the moment you step into Stadkeller, you'll be drawn to the restaurant's wooden accents and candlelit ambiance awaiting you. Take your seat at your reserved spot and browse the menu while you wait for the show to begin.
What sets the Stadkeller experience apart is the interactive nature of the show. During the performance, you might have the opportunity to do more than just listen – you might find yourself on stage, engaging in a traditional folklore dance or even yodeling! This unique participation allows you to become part of the performance and to connect with the authenticity of Swiss culture on a personal level. Since I was traveling solo, I felt especially grateful to be invited onstage to participate in the culture.
Beyond the yodeling and dance, the show at Stadkeller is a celebration of Swiss culture in its entirety. You'll be treated to a showcase of traditional Swiss instruments, from the enchanting Alpine horn to the lively accordion.
The cultural journey doesn't end with music and dance; it extends to the culinary delights that Stadkeller has to offer. Audience members are invited to indulge in a sumptuous Swiss feast, including the iconic Swiss fondue and a range of other delectable dishes that showcase the country's culinary prowess.
Reservations are needed to secure a coveted seat here. From April to October, Stadkeller Lucerne puts on nightly folklore shows. Music begins at 7:30pm, gearing the audience up for the full show at 8pm. The show lasts quite long, giving the audience plenty of time to indulge in food and order as much as they’d like. After all, the food is what you’re paying for. The show is just an amazing form of entertainment to enjoy while you feast!
